Morning Routine

About this Poster

I’m in awe of the humans that ride their bikes year-round, and I wanted to show a side of cycling that was uncommon, yet relatable. The idea of biking as a routine paired really well with another favorite pastime of people in the North: brushing snow off of vehicles in the morning. I love the simplicity that two-wheeled commuting brings to the world, and enjoyed finding that same austerity in this print.

The Less, The Better

I was able to use one of the core ideas—simplicity in transportation—to define the line quality of the illustration. Biking in the winter poses unique challenges to your equipment, and the less you have, the better off you are.

Single-Speed Mind

I grew up in Minneapolis, MN, so both snow and bicycles are close to my heart. Biking is great because, no matter what else is on my mind, I’m forced into this singular mindset. Sure, there are all sorts of external forces, but that all kind of fades away when I saddle up. It’s just a really good time to think introspectively.

How Cool Is That?

Using the white paper to subtly include the snow in the illustration meant that the light-gray had to be perfect. I labored over the contrast and execution of this first color, and landed on ever-so-cool Pantone 7541U. It was a huge flood of color, and the fine folks at Mama’s Sauce pulled it off with ease.
