I wanted to make a poster about the happiness that a bike ride can bring. Biking is such a simple pleasure that can lift your mood and clear your mind. It is as therapeutic as it is practical, and I always feel happier after a ride.
I work as a digital designer, doing both UX and UI design, at Duffy in Minneapolis. I freelance outside of work, doing a range of branding, print, and digital projects. When I'm not working you can find me reading, planning a trip, or hanging by a lake.
I started with sketching out ideas and collecting inspiration online. I wanted a visual style that was somewhat minimal but where the concept shown through. After a few initial ideas came out on paper, I decided to use a vintage half-tone effect, and tried out many different found vintage bicyclist images and smile illustrations to get to my final design.
Biking makes me happy, simply put. It is restorative and is the best way to connect with your surroundings and with the outdoors.
From far away it is reads as a simple rendition of a photograph. Anyone who gets up close to it gets the surprise of seeing that it is really made up of smiley faces.
